The game comprises fifty challenging missions with objectives and difficulty settings. The ultimate task of the player is to explore the land, battle against evil people and recover the stolen items and save the prisoners. According to the plot, the protagonist is sent on an epic mission to assassinate those who assisting the territory of Ogawara, including spies, army generals, and more. It takes place in the stunning world of Gohda, where the protagonist named as Azuma Ninja Clan reside under the king Gohda. Unlike previous titles, in which the player create and customize his own ninja character, them builds up his skills as he play through the game, Tenchu Z lets the player select his playable character from a small selection of pre-made characters, as the player takes instruction from the character of previous title named as Rikimaru.
